Sock Bunny

Pattern By Pat Porter & Ann Dunn

MATERIALS:
1 Man's sock size 11-13 white or colored with heel and no writing
2 Round black 3/8" buttons with shanks,(for eyes)
Pink and black embroidery floss
Pom pom for bunny tail appox. 1/2" to 1" size
Black and white carpet thread

NOTE: I prefer fishing line for tying the ears and neck of the bunny instead of the white carpet thread.

Fiberfill or your choice of stuffing

BASIC BUNNY INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Decide which side of the sock you want to be the right side of the bunny. Then turn the sock with the heel side up and sock laying flat; measure 2 1/2" from the heel fold towards the toe. Mark with seamtress chalk or a water soluble pen. Place mark at the center of the toe. Measure and mark 3/4" on either side of the toe center.

Step 2: Connect the dots as shown in picture to make the stitching lines for the ears.

Step 3: Stitch along the ear stitching line.
Step 4: Cut between the stitching lines and trim seams to 1/4".
Step 5: Turn sock right side out. The heel of the sock is the face of the bunny and the toe becom is now the ears. Pinch each ear together at the base to form a pleat in front and tie with doubled carpet thread or thread to match sock color. Tie off behind ears.
Step 6: Stuff sock to form head and neck. The head is formed into a ball about 11" around. The stuffing must extend and fill the neck to stabilize the head. The body will be stuffed after putting on clothing.
Step 7: Wrap neck with doubled carpet thread or matching thread and tie off in the back. The neck should measure about 7" around.
Step 8: Thread a long thin needle, that fits through the button shrank, with 36" of carpet thread doubled. Tie one button to end of threads.
Step 9: Measure from the base of the ear down head about 2" and insert needle. Pull needle out the other side in the same position. Pull thread to position the first eye button.
Step 10: Thread second button onto needle and hold eye in position.
Step 11: Reinsert needle behind second eye button and exit needle behind first eye button. Do not try to re-enter the button shank. Pull thread tightly to form raised nose area. Repeat 2-3 times to secure eyes. Do not cut thread.

Step 12: Insert needle behind eye
and exit needle about 1 1/2" below
and between eyes to begin the mouth.
(See picture to right)
Step 13: Reinsert needle taking a small stitch in mouth area and exit needle behind other eye button. Pull thread to form mouth and wrap thread around eye. Repeat same procedure again to secure the mouth.
Step 14: To tie off thread, wrap around eye button and tie a knot.
Step 15: Insert needle behind eye button and exit needle through top of head. Cut thread to let ends disappear into head.
Step 16: Use needle to pull fiberfill into whisker area as shown.
Step 17: Following diagrams(See pictures below)to embroider nose on adult rabbit

(See picture to the right)
insert needle about 2" away from
nose area and exit needle at starting point.
Anchor thread by taking a tiny stitch
and clip stray end of thread.
Take a 3/4" stitch and complete triangular
nose area with satin stitch.
Using same thread continue stitching
with stem stitch to complete mouth as shown
on the diagram.

End stitching by exiting needle behind eye button and tying. Bring needle through top of head and cut thread as before.

Step 18: Make freckles using a single strand of black embroidery floss and a one wrap french knot. Repeat alternating sides. Make 3 freckles in each whisker area. (See picture to left)

Step 19: (See picture to the right)

Whiskers are made with black or white carpet thread. Thread needle and knot about 2" from end; insert needle in whisker area and come straight across. Tie a single knot at surface. Trim each whisker to about 2". Repeat this step for each of the remaining whiskers.
Step 20: Cut off 2 1/2" of the bottom (cuff section) of the sock to make the arms.
Step 21: Turn arm section to the wrong side. With a water soluble pen draw arms to measure 2 1/4" in length.
Arm will conform to the width of the sleeve.
