Cold-Weather Lapel Pin

DIRECTIONS: Easy
SIZE: 3 3/4 inches long
MATERIALS:
2-ply yarn: small amount of main color
Crochet hook size D/3
Small gold safety pin
Dinner fork
Yarn needle
GAUGE: 6sc=1 inch
PATTERN NOTE:
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
HAT:
Row 1: Ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn.
Rows 2-18: Working in back lps only, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.
At the end of Row 18, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.
With yarn needle and rem length of yarn, sew Row 18 to opposite side of foundation ch, do not fasten off.
Weave rem length of yarn through ends of rows at top of hat, pull tightly to close opening, knot to secure, fasten off.
POMPON
Wrap yarn around tines of dinner fork 10 times. Tie a length of yarn tightly around center. Remove yarn from fork, cut ends and fluff. Sew to top of hat.
Fold brim upward 1/2 inch.
MITTENS: (make 2)
Row 1: Ch 23, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 3 chs (cuff), sc in next 6 chs(top of hand), sl st in next 2 chs (top of fingers), sc in next 6 chs (palm), sl st in next 4 chs (cuff), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Working in back lps only, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next 6 sts, sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts, sl st in next 4 sts, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
THUMB
Row 4: Workingg in back lps only, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 sts, ch 2, sk next 8 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 4 sts, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Working in back lps only, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sc in each next 2 chs, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 4 sts, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.
FINISHING
Fold mitten in half at 2 sl sts at top of fingers. With yarn needle and rem length of yarn, sew edges of cuff, around thumb and side edge of hand together to within 2 sl sts at top of hand, push needle through to opposite edge, sew opposite side of foundation ch together down side edge of hand and cuff.
Attach yarn to center of cuff of first mitten, ch 15, sl st in center of cuff on 2nd mitten, fasten off.
Sew center of hat up inside hat so that 1/4 inch of chain is visible between hat and mittens.
Attach gold safety pin to back of hat.
